One of my goals for this year is to pursue a new adventure. I have wanted to race a triathlon for as long as I can remember, and since my parents very graciously gifted me with a bicycle for my grad school graduation last year, there’s no time like the present!
In January, I signed up for the Central Park Triathlon- a sprint tri taking place completely within Central Park. It seemed like a safe place to take my first plunge (literally) into multi-sport events for two reasons: 1) it’s a sprint tri (aka the shortest triathlon around) and 2) the swim portion takes place in a swimming pool (aka no sand, seaweed, slime, and other things that may cause chafing when wedged between buttox and bike shorts).
Fast forward to June and I am drinking the triathlon kool-aid – training is going well, I’m reading every tri article and blog post I can get my hands on, and I’m DESPERATE to sign up for a triathlon with an open water swim. Bring on the un-chlorinated waters of the ocean – I want to be these people:
Thanks to banner ads that follow you around the only four major triathlon websites out there, I’m now doing a second sprint tri, TriRock Asbury Park, three weeks after my first. I mean, I’ll already be trained for it, right?
So here’s hoping I really enjoy swimming, biking and running all in a row, because August is the month of the Triathlon.
Tell me I’m not alone here, have you ever gotten swept up in the excitement of a new healthy habit and gone a little overboard?
